Campaign of the Month: May 2013

The Dark Queen of the West

December 23th 2010 - The Musicman Can

Persons of Interest: James Spence, Marie Brey, Red Feather

Late in the evening on the 23rd of December, James, Marie, Red Feather and Genghis all gathered at the Chicago city limits, just off E 95th street. They stand in the back lot of a marina store-yard, among a large number of cars secreted away among the many boats stored here. Before them, a warehouse looms, blotting out the illuminated Chicago skyline – through the quarter opened security roller, lights and sound can be made out from within the building. Genghis holds up the flyer from the pizza boxes, scrutinizing it and comparing it to the Hunter-Net note they found on the refrigerator in the vampire’s haven. “So this is the place! I haven’t been to an illegal jam like this since my college years. Man, that brings back the memories, let me tell you. Makes me wish for the days before I Awakened and had my life threatened on a weekly basis.”

The flyer mentions a myriad of bands, all presumably local or desperate, but there is a large call out at the bottom of the page, advertising the presence of DJ Musicman64, promising that it will be a night to remember.

James takes in his surroundings, checking to see if anything is out of the ordinary. Keeping his voice low, “Don’t forget Genghis, this Musicman64 is part of this ‘Hunter-Net’ that the vampires were taking out, so keep your eyes open. Remember why we’re really here.”

{Perception – James : Wits & Composure. Pool of 4}

James notices several mobile shadows in the parking lot – mostly hanging in the fringes, conversing in low whispers. They have the look of couples who wanted to get out of the insanity inside the warehouse and find someplace a bit…quieter.

“I used to avoid these things,” Marie says with a sigh while checking the surroundings. “You never know when the crazies will come out.”

{Perception – Marie : Wits & Composure. Pool of 8}

Marie catches sight of a steady stream of younger looking people, sharing drinks from paper bags, heading through the warehouse gate, barely visible in the light outside the building – they seem hell bent on having a good time.

Red Feather looks down at Genghis with a disapproving stare. “I find this entire event to be in highly poor taste.” He says softly, “This is not… music.” He adds, with a small cringe.

{Perception – Red Feather: Wits & Composure. Pool of 6}

Red Feather’s eyes dart around, but they keep being pulled towards the opened warehouse gate, dancing lights and flashing music seeming to pull his attention into the press of bodies inside the building.

“Please remind me why exactly we’re being forced to attend this? I feel it unnecessary to point out to everyone that I do not… ‘fit in’ here.” SkyDancer chirps in agreement and preens her wing. “And will they let me bring in SkyDancer?” he adds with concern.

“I wouldn’t worry too much about your appearance. It will probably be dimly lit inside, and once the music starts no one will even notice us.” Marie pauses for a second and glances at SkyDancer. “It would be hard to miss the bird though. She’ll have to stay outside if we want to go in under the radar.”

After making sure that no one is around to hear them, James says, “Oh yes, I forgot that you weren’t there when we tussled with a couple of vampires. Good thing we had one of our own with us. Anyway, they had a list of handles in their den and Musicman64 – the DJ tonight – is the only one that wasn’t crossed off. They were listed as Hunter-Net, and vampires were hunting them, so we thought we should find out what was going on.” James claps Red Feather on the shoulder, “It may sound a little strange, but let the beat and the bass flow through you, you might even find you like it.” He smiles and gets ready to head inside.

Red Feather shakes his head at James’ comment about the music but doesn’t respond. “You mean that vampires truly exist?” Red Feather says, by way of response, “I had always heard rumors, but only half believed them before recently. Do you know anything else about this ‘Hunter-Net’?”

“I only just found out myself. This whole ‘Awakened’ world is pretty crazy, not going to lie. As far as the Hunter-Net, all we know is that the vampires were crossing names off a list, and if they’re human, the least we can do is warn them, if not help them.” James thinks for a moment, “We’ve met a couple vampires that seemed alright, but call me prejudiced, but I think I’ll side with humans over vampires any day.”

Ghengis frowns. “I think you might want to be careful with broad reaching statements like that. I’ve lost more than a few friends to Hunters. They don’t just go after vampires.” He falls into silence as the group approaches the warehouse and ducks inside.

The music swells as there is a tidal assault on the senses of each individual, culminating in more than a little disorientation. The lights are as varied in color as the people dancing within – there are more than a few girls and guys dancing about in stereotypical Indian costumes, and most of the others are in various states of dress or undress, depending on how you look at it. Steel beams frame the warehouse, and there are a number of boats shelved in bays along the walls, keeping them inside, protected against the brutal winter conditions. There are a few figures lounging around on the prow of a few boats, drinking, watching the throngs of people down below. Almost immediately, Ghengis becomes lost in the crowd with only a brief smile.

Looking around the structure gives you a better overview of the layout – there are speakers and lights hanging from every available surface, and off to one end is a small, unassuming DJ booth with someone hard at work behind it. During an intentional lull in the song’s pounding beat, he picks up the microphone. “Creatures of the night, make some noise!” There is an almost deafening roar of response from the crowd, and when it quiets down, the mix spins up into a blistering remix of Werewolves of London . “DJ R3D34D is in the house! Musicman will be late as usual, but until then, lets party until our bones turn to dust!” Another rising howl comes from the crowd.

{Perception – Red Feather: Wits & Composure. Pool of 6} {Perception – Marie : Wits & Composure. Pool of 8} {Perception – James : Wits & Composure. Pool of 4}

Marie and Red Feather’s eyes are drawn to the DJ, watching the colored lights play across his pale skin, reflecting true reds and greens as the colors shift and change as he tortures the vinyl in front of him. They both notice a faintly perceptible red dot appear in the vicinity of the DJ’s bare chest, wavering slightly between the borders of his wide open button down shirt.

Red Feather immediately grabs James’ shoulder and urgently points at the dot. “Do something, quickly!” he half-whispers, half-shouts over the deafening music.

Leaving James to hopefully be able to act in time, Red Feather calls telepathically to Sky Dancer and tells her to dive at the DJ’s head, hoping it will distract the audience from whatever James does and possibly get the DJ to move so the bullet will miss.

James struggles to move through the rave towards the DJ, his vocalizations and movements masked in the seething mass of bodies as he begins casting the a spell to bestow an unseen shield on the DJ stand.

{Unseen Shield (DJ stand) – James: Forces & Gnosis & Willpower (3). Pool of 9}

Sky Dancer arcs from the metal girders overhead, spinning down towards the DJ’s head, causing him to flinch out of the way, causing a momentary hiccup in his musical remixing. Just then, James feels a lick of power dart forth from his outstretched hand, casting wide a net of light particles through the fog in the room, looking like nothing more than some extra laser lights sparkling through the air. Seconds later, he feels an intense tug on the central part of his net, followed by what seems to be a shower of sparks. He can no longer see the red dot on the DJ’s chest.

{Perception – Red Feather: Wits & Composure. Pool of 6} {Perception – Marie : Wits & Composure. Pool of 8} {Perception – James : Wits & Composure. Pool of 4}

James breathes a sigh of relief, turning back towards Marie and Red Feather, noticing as he does a brief flicker of red dance across his vision. Marie and Red Feather both notice a glimmer of something on James’ clothing.

“Shit.” Marie stretches her perception to the limits as she seeks out the bands of fate surrounding James and begins to bend them to her will. As she mentally tugs at the bands around him, she feels the weave tighten up around him slightly.

{Grant Fortune’s Protection (James) – Marie: Presence & Persuasion & Fate. Pool of 8. 1 Successes, +1 Armor}

She then pulls Red Feather down so they’re below the head line of the crowd and, hopefully, out of sight of the sniper, her eyes casting about in an attempt to locate the sniper based on his muzzle flash.

When James sees the flicker of red over his vision, he immediately begins shoving through the mosh pit, sliding behind the DJ’s stand – he hasn’t seem to be noticed yet, but he does see a short-barrel shotgun leaning next to the DJ, as well as an old looking sword. He reaches out to borrow power from the lights above the stand and the music coming out of the speakers dims almost inaudibly as he collects power towards himself in a bid to grant himself more armor.

{Unseen Shield (James) – James: Forces & Gnosis & Willpower (3). Pool of 9. 3 Successes, +3 Armor}

{Perception – Skydancer: Wits & Composure. Pool of 9.}

Red Feather realizes there is little he can do magically here, but calls for Sky Dancer to see if she can locate the sniper. There is a brief cry above the din of the music, recognizable as Skydancer, coming from the back of the warehouse, somewhere up high. Moments later, Marie spots a brief, dim flash of light from up on one of the boat racks. James feels a whoosh of air by his cheek as one of the small tweeters he is hiding behind suddenly lets out a tiny squelch as a shaft of light pierces it. Marie casts her mind’s eye wide in a net around the boat she saw the flash from, feeling for the grains of powder in the next bullet, intent on fusing them together.

{Monkey’s Paw (Assailant) – Marie: Wits & Occult & Fate. Pool of 6. 1 Successes}

Seeing that the DJ is still spinning and the crowd hasn’t reacted to the gun fire, James looks up at the DJ, “What are you doing dude? There’s some guy up in the rafters with a rifle, and I think he thinks you’re Musicman64! Why this guy is after Musicman, I have no idea, but get down!” James attempts to grab the DJ and pull him down behind the station as well.

The music skips as the DJ is pulled off balance and James notices that the arm he’s grabbed onto feels not unlike a steel cable. As the headphones slip off of the DJ, they swing inexorably like a pendulum towards the ground where they impact with a clatter. As the DJ’s head swings around to look at James, he can’t help but notice some gently pointed ears. The DJ breaks into a grin – a row of jagged teeth clearly visible. “My… how thoughtful… I didn’t order out, and you’re much more convenient looking than waiting for one of those tramps…” As he falls, he uses his momentum to attempt to wrap his arms around James.

{Grapple (James) – DJ: Strength & Brawl less Defense (3). Success}

James finds himself bound in the DJ’s grip with the jaws beginning to close around his neck. He flails his arms out to his sides and grips onto the first thing to come to hand – the extension cord running to the DJ booth. He begins to draw power from the line, tracing the current in his mind, creating a mental map of the electricity in the whole building.

{Control Electricity (DJ) – James: Forces (3) & Gnosis (3) & Willpower (3). Pool of 9. 3 Successes}

He seeks out the power from three of the nearby mains lines and draws them through the extension cord, feeling it sizzle and pop in his hand as the overcharged electricity flows through the wire, heating it until it’s almost too hot to touch. The overvoltage current leaps into the mixer, causing a horrendous shriek as it feeds back instantaneously to all of the speakers as it explodes into shrapnel. James is shielded from the worst of the blast by his assailant who rears up in surprise and pain. Silence reigns for a few moments as the breakers automatically trip open due to the massive surge and all of the lights immediately go dark. There is a short, far off click followed by a muffled curse and some fumbling. As the chemical lights in the warehouse click on, the crowd begins making disappointed noises and starts to leave.

Upon hearing the far off click and curse, Marie focuses her will at the boat the sniper has taken refuge on, trying to incapacitate or at least get a look at him for future identification.

{Monkey’s Paw (Assailant) – Marie: Wits & Occult & Fate. Pool of 6. 2 Successes}

James gets back up away from his attacker, running back around the DJ stand. “We backed the wrong horse!” He shouts as he runs back to the group. “DJ Re-Dead isn’t entirely human! Go figure!”

“Not human??” Maries hisses, trying to keep her voice down. “As in one of the vampires hunting Musicman64? Where is Westin when we need him. Matter of fact, where is Ghengis? We’ve got to deal with these guys if we can and get some answers.”

As if on cue, Ghengis steps out of the almost entirely departed crowd, slipping what appears to be a glowing bracelet in his pocket – a set of ten digits is clearly visible in black lipstick on his left arm. “I knew you three’d be up to something, what’s all the commotion? I haven’t been to an underground rave in ages! And did someone say something about not human? Are you sure? I thought we were just here to talk to someone. What have you done now?”

As if to punctuate his statement, there is the brief groan of tortured metal as Marie feels her Monkey’s paw working it’s way through the securing straps and metal suspending the boat in the air. There is final shriek as the tortured metal gives way, the banding leaping away from the boat in desperation, before the small yacht begins it’s tumultuous journey downwards, sending the remaining onlookers scattering in fear. Seconds after the ship begins to lilt to one side, there is a startled yelp above the din. There are numerous other squelches of metal, fiberglass and plastic as the yacht tears away from it’s fourth floor moorings and crashes into numerous other craft below, before coming to an abrupt halt, splintered prow resting against the concrete floor.

James joins everyone else in staring at the fallen yacht, “Holy shit…” He pauses for only a brief second before turning to Genghis, “Right, yes. DJ Re-dead just tried to take a bite out of me AFTER we saved him from a sniper. I have a feeling that I got our wires crossed about just what’s going on. If Musicman64 IS a member of this hunter-net, then maybe he’s the sniper.” James throws up his hands, “Maybe it’ll be easier if we just take them both… although if the guy that tried to eat me got banged up a little, I wouldn’t be too upset.”

Marie nods. “Agreed. What one doesn’t know, the other may. If the sniper really is Musicman64, then he may have misunderstood our intentions when Hermes saved the non-human. If one of you handles that…thing, then I can try to talk our way out of a fight with the real DJ. Assuming that’s who it is.”

In preparation for dealing with the DJ, James sends his senses soaring through the air, binding themselves to the steel frame of the DJ’s light stand, searching for the best way to lever it from gravity’s clutches and utilize it as a massive club.

{Paradox (Telekinesis) – James: Gnosis Dice (2) & Pentacle Focus (-1). Pool of 1. 0 Successes}

James feels the Abyss tearing at the fibers of himself, through the extension of his will but shrugs them off, preparing himself to tear the frame off of the concrete.

{Telekinesis (Light Stand) – James: Forces (3) & Gnosis (3) & Willpower (3) – 5. Pool of 4. Str 5 + 1 Successes}

Mentally shoving the sandbags holding it in place aside, James heaves the light stand into the air by sheer force of his mind, levering it into a floating position between the mixing stand and the group. As he feels trickles of sweat forming against his mind, he hears Ghengis mutter off to the side, “Showoff…”

Marie clears her mind of the present, focusing a ball of her energy into a tiny ball, forcing it to flow through her until it reaches a spot right behind her eyes, where she lets it expand rapidly.

{Momentary Flux (Combatants) – Marie: Wits (3) & Investigation (1) & Time (2). Pool of 6. 1 Success}

She gets a jumble of glimpses, barely decipherable – flashes of light in the dark warehouse, her vision coming to an end with a human figure stalking away from the warehouse with what appears to be a rifle case on his back.

Ghengis, looking somewhat disdainfully at James, casts about him in the darkness before coming up with what appears to be a bottle of water that one of the ravers left behind. A grimace plays across his face in the darkness of the warehouse as he unscrews the cap, empties the bottle into his mouth and screws his eyes shut in concentration. He makes a sputtering sound as he spits a fine spray of liquid out in the direction of the DJ stand before bending over and gagging. “Does anyone… have a light?” He seems to be barely containing his desire to vomit.

There is some loud cursing from the far end of the warehouse, although it’s origin is difficult to pinpoint in the darkness. Likewise, in the direction of the mixing stand there is a sound not often heard outside of action films – the racking of a shotgun loading a shell into the chamber, followed by hideous laughter.

With the guy pulling out the shotgun, that makes James’s decision easy. With his telekinesis, wills the steel latticework of the light stand to climb into the air, arcing it down towards the sound of the shotgun. One of the lights screeches in protest as it’s cable gets torn out as it is hefted into the air. After the girder is in position, James relaxes his concentration on one end of the light stand, allowing it to scythe down through the air.

{Light Stand (Shotgun-toting DJ) – James: Strength (6) & Weapon (3) & Improvised ( – 1) & Untrained ( – 1). Pool of 7 (Less Unknown). 1 Success}

There is a resounding thud of metal as the stand slams into something which makes a angry grunt followed by the roar of a shotgun, the muzzle flash briefly illuminating the look of surprise on the DJ’s face. The pellets rip through the air tearing through a spot just to the left of where James is standing, pushed off course by the impact. Bright flashes of light appear as pellets clatter to the floor off the shield, stopping right in front of James’ face as he feels a bit of triumph coursing through his veins, only for his racing brain to realize that it’s adrenaline – his arm aches subtly as he feels air stir through the shredded remains of his shirt sleeve.

{Combat Result – James: . 2 Lethal Damage}

{Concentration – James: Resolve (3) & Composure (2). Pool of 5. 4 Successes}

James manages to struggle the light rig back into the air above his assailant. Elsewhere in the warehouse, the swearing continues. He quickly realizes the folly of trying to stand up to a man with a shotgun. He steels himself, listening for the racking of another shell, tensing for the moment when the DJ fires again. Time comes and the DJ fires his next shot, James releases his will in a burst of energy in front of him, hoping to turn the projectiles away. His concentration disrupted, the light fixture above the DJ plummets with a clang, eliciting some muffled cursing.

{Paradox (Turn Projectile) – James: Gnosis Dice (2) & Pentacle Focus (-1) & Paradox Invocation (2). Pool of 3. 2 Successes}

As James brings his will to bear on the incoming projectiles, he feels parts of his mind begin to ache as the universe rejects the bending he is attempting to do. He can feel the wounds in his arm begin to pulse and ache as he forces this feeling of wrongness out of his reality, noting that his body begins to ache all over.

{Paradox Result – James: . 2 Bashing Damage (Resistant)}

{Turn Projectile (Shotgun-toting DJ’s Pellets) – James: Forces (3) & Gnosis (3) & Paradox (-2). Pool of 4. 1 Success}

James throws his aching hand out in front of him, willing an transparent wall of light into existence just in time for the shotgun pellets to careen into it, sending off a sheen of sparks as the buckshot careens off to the left. There is the sound of shattering glass as the projectiles slam into the fiberglass and windows of an expensive looking yacht.

From in front of him, there is the sound of struggle and wrenching metal as his antagonist struggles to extricate itself from the wreckage of the light pole being unceremoniously dumped on it.

Seeing that James has the DJ somewhat under wraps, Marie negotiates the warehouse to the wreckage of boats in the far back. When she gets there, among some scattered jewelry and life-vests, she sees a middle-aged man pinned beneath a dinghy, broken in such a way to prevent him from extricating himself yet not doing any harm. On seeing Marie, the man frantically scrabbles to try and get his weapon, an antique looking hunting rifle with a laser sight strapped beneath the barrel, that has fallen just out of his reach.

{The Perfect Moment (Sniper) – Marie: Wits (3) & Occult (0) & Fate (3). Pool of 6. 2 Success}

Brushing her hair back behind her ear, Marie gives the man a disarming smile, which seems to stop him struggling, at least momentarily. A few quiet inquiries among the wreckage and she manages to get the man to open up, at least a little.

“What? Yeah, I’m the musicman, the pied piper, come to send that wretched thing back to whatever grave it crawled out of.” He grunts and strains against one of the spars holding him down. “You going to get me out of here, lady? No? Look, I don’t know what your deal is, but those people are dangerous – if that maniac DJ up there is still in the building, you’re not safe, you hear? And his buddy, the one who protected him? Yeah, he’s not much better. One of ‘em should be dead, and the other one the universe can’t stand. If I were you, I’d steer clear of the both of them, and get out of here quick. I’d appreciate it if you can lend a hand and get this boat off me – that charged creep probably rigged something about the boat I was on.” He seems to be babbling, probably a little dazed and concussed from his fall. “Just help me out of here before the cops come, will ya?”

“Hey, did that guy just say that he is Musicman?” James shouts. “Shit! Andi, help him up, we could use a hand with DJ Dead Man Walking over here!”

James turns to Genghis, “I have no idea what I’m doing, so a little help here would be appreciated!” James takes this opportunity to put some distance between himself and the shotgun wielding maniac. He drags Red Feather along and gestures to Genghis, trying to put a rack of boats between him and the gunman. While he is moving, he opens his mind’s eye, searching around the entire warehouse.

{Spatial Map – James: Int (4) & Occult (1) & Space (1) & Rote Skill (1). Pool of 7. 3 Successes}

As soon as he opens his mind’s eye, a small HUD comes online, giving him an exact layout of the warehouse. He pulls Red Feather behind an old fishing boat that had been hauled in to have some barnacles cleaned of of her hull, and not a moment too soon. Just as they turn the corner, there is a roar of defiance and a rending of metal as the DJ manages to free itself from James’ improvised bludgeon and a shotgun blast tears through the warehouse, kicking of sparks as the rounds dent the metal hull James is now hiding behind. Ghengis curses. “Do I look like I know what I’m doing?! Hit him with another light stand!” He digs through his pockets, coming up with a scrap of wire and his phone – he tears the battery out, wrapping the wire around the contacts and tossing it at the pool of liquid he spit at the DJ earlier before dashing for James’ hiding spot.

Meanwhile, the musicman looks confused. “Your name is Andi? You know that guy? He’s dangerous – you shouldn’t stay with him. Creatures like him threaten to tear this reality apart. Get me out of here and I’ll help you put that DJ down – you’re going to have to act fast, or it might be too late.”

Muttering something about unfortunate timing, Marie steps on MusicMan’s gun that’s just out of his reach. “Look. We came here to save your life. You’re on the hit list of beings like the one that we thought was human.” She gestures without looking in the direction of the undead DJ. “Even if you don’t want to be allies, is there anything you can tell me about where to find them? Weaknesses? Routines?”

He lets a low growl out. “That thing? It’s just like you and me, but it’s fueled by the blood of the dead – it’s faster, stronger, but it can be put down just like one of us. Get me up and hand me the gun and I’ll end this, just like I was going to before that cursed creature interfered.”

“I think we give him the gun, and worry about what happens after we deal with ReDead, Andi!” James calls back through the warehouse to MusicMan, “MusicMan, what do you say we call a truce until after we take out whatever this guy is, I have nothing against you, it was all just a misunderstanding.”

James then pops out from cover after the last shotgun blast, and draws up from his inner reserves the remainder of his willpower, focusing it into a hardened brick in his hand. He releases it at ReDead before ducking back behind a metal strut. As he does, he notices a flicker of light, heat and flame – a quick glance reveals Ghengis beating a hasty retreat towards the back of the warehouse.

{Paradox (Telekinetic Strike) – James: Gnosis Dice (2) & Pentacle Focus (-1) & Paradox Invocation (3). Pool of 4. 1 Successes}

As the force flies out of James’ hand, he feels fatigue creep into his arm, his muscles screaming in agony as Newton’s laws slips past his control and hammers his arm with force.

{Paradox Result – James: . 1 Bashing Damage (Resistant)}

The projection of force leaves James’ hand, carrying with it some flickers of the building flame that is creeping towards a nearby boat.

{Telekinetic Strike (ReDead) – James: Forces (3) & Gnosis (3) & Willpower (3). Pool of 9. 2 Successes}

James is rewarded with a solid impact, a roar of pain followed by the roar of a shotgun. The pellets rip past him and in Ghengis’ direction he can hear a little shriek.

Marie moves the dinghy off of Musicman64 and hands him the gun. She gestures for him to take the lead, “After you,” and follows close behind to make sure he doesn’t aim at James instead. He seems to steady himself, then brings his weapon to bear, letting off a quick shot downrange – James feels the bullet whistle through the air and tracks it as it enters the engine compartment of a nearby boat, sending a small rivulet of gasoline onto the floor, heading towards the spreading flames. Half a second later, he hears a rough thud from the direction of the DJ booth, accented by the steadily increasing volume of the crackling flames.

Comments

James will take in his surroundings (rolling Perception, Wits + Composure, 4 dice) to see if he notices anything out of the ordinary. Keeping his voice low, “Don’t forget Genghis, this Musicman64 is part of this ‘Hunter-Net’ that the vampires were taking out, so keep your eyes open. Remember why we’re really here.”

//James is ready to head inside whenever the rest of the party is ready.

Red Feather looks down at Genghis with a disapproving stare. “I find this entire event to be in highly poor taste.” He says softly, “this is not… music.” He adds, with a small cringe.
(Red feather will also make a perception check here)

“Please remind me why exactly we’re being forced to attend this? I feel it unnecessary to point out to everyone that I do not… ‘fit in’ here.” SkyDancer chirps in agreement and preens her wing. “And will they let me bring in SkyDancer?” he adds with concern.

//Red Feather is also ready to go in when everyone is ready (even if SkyDancer waits outside)

Making sure that no one is around to hear them, James will say, “Oh yes, I forgot that you weren’t there when we tussled with a couple of vampires. Good thing we had one of our own with us. Anyway, they had a list of handles in their den and Musicman64 – the DJ tonight – is the only one that wasn’t crossed off. They were listed as Hunter-Net, and vampires were hunting them, so we thought we should find out what was going on.” James will clap Red Feather on the shoulder, “It may sound a little strange, but let the beat and the bass flow through you, you might even find you like it.” He’ll smile, and get ready to head inside.

As far as the Hunter-Net, all we know is that the vampires were crossing names off a list, and if they’re human, the least we can do is warn them, if not help them.” James will think for a moment, “We’ve met a couple vampires that seemed alright, but call me prejudiced, but I think I’ll side with humans over vampires any day.”

(When they arrive) “I used to avoid these things,” Marie will say with a sigh and check the surroundings (Perception check). “You never know when the crazies will come out.”

(In response to Red Feather) “I wouldn’t worry too much about your appearance. It will probably be dimly lit inside, and once the music starts no one will even notice us.” Marie will pause for a second and glance at SkyDancer. “It would be hard to miss the bird though. She’ll have to stay outside if we want to go in under the radar.”

//I want to do something but i didn’t notice the red dot!! :P

//Instead of taking the chance on rolling to see if I can hear the gunshot coming, i’m doing the following.

James will try to quickly move towards the DJ, casting the spell bestow unseen shield on the DJ stand (protects characters in that area for the scene). If, after that, no shot has been fired, he will attempt to use “light mastery” to render the DJ stand pitch black shouting “get down” over the crowd at him.

Bestow Unseen Shield (Forces 3 + Gnosis 3 + Willpower 3)
Light Mastery (Forces 3 + Gnosis 3, 1 paradox)

//Decided to go with the boring route :P

When James sees the flicker of red over his vision, he will immediately attempt to dive behind the DJ stand (if he’s close enough, otherwise, he’ll just try to take some cover somehow) and cast Unseen Shield on himself.

Unseen Shield (3 Forces + 3 Gnosis + 3 Willpower – + 1 point of armor per success)

(After seeing the laser on James)
“Shit.” Marie will attempt to cast Grant Fortune’s Protection on James, then pull Red Feather down so they’re below the head line of the crowd and, hopefully, out of sight of the sniper. She will attempt to locate the sniper based on his muzzle flash. If he does shoot, and if she locates the muzzle flash, then Marie will try casting Monkey’s Paw (on the next turn) on the gun to render it ineffective. If he’s shot James, then she will cast Bestow Exceptional Luck (on the turn after that) in an effort to help him survive the attack and succeed at his next endeavor.

Red Feather realizes there is little he can do magically here, but will attempt to provide medical assistance if James is shot. Otherwise, he will send Sky Dancer (//who is so far being far more useful of a PC than he is) to see if she can locate the sniper.

//apologies for the delay in posting. I was getting ready for and now on a trip to Ireland! Hello from the little town of Howth! =)

Seeing that the DJ is still spinning and the crowd hasn’t reacted to the gun fire, James will look up at the DJ, “What are you doing dude? There’s some guy up in the rafters with a rifle, and I think he thinks you’re Musicman64! Why this guy is after Musicman, I have no idea, but get down!” James will attempt to grab the DJ and pull him down behind the station as well.

James will get try to get up and run back around the DJ stand. “We backed the wrong horse!” he’ll shout as he runs back to the group. “DJ Re-Dead isn’t entirely human! Go figure!”

//I suppose now we wait for the others to respond :).

Upon hearing the far off click and curse, Marie will cast Monkey’s Paw again, trying to hit the sniper’s boat in order to incapacitate or at least get a look at him for future identification.

(After James’ shout) “Not human??” Maries hisses, trying to keep her voice down. “As in one of the vampires hunting Musicman64? Where is Westin when we need him. Matter of fact, where is Ghengis? We’ve got to deal with these guys if we can and get some answers.”

James will join everyone else in staring at the fallen yacht, “Holy shit…” He’ll pause for only a brief second before turing to Genghis, “Right, yes. DJ Re-dead just tried to take a bite out of me AFTER we saved him from a sniper. I have a feeling that I got our wires crossed about just what’s going on. If Musicman64 IS a member of this hunter-net, then maybe he’s the sniper.” James will throw up his hands, “Maybe it’ll be easier if we just take them both… although if the guy that tried to eat me got banged up a little, I wouldn’t be too upset.”

James, in preparation for dealing with the DJ, is going to cast Telekinesis on the nearest steel light stand, trying to wield it like a club.

Telekinesis (3 Forces + 3 Gnosis + 3 Willpower – 5. Dice pool of 4. Str 5 + Successes)
Paradox Roll (Base 2 dice, using my pentacle focus -1. Pool of 1. Will choose to suffer backlash to contain it, if necessary).

“Agreed. What one doesn’t know, the other may. If the sniper really is Musicman64, then he may have misunderstood our intentions when Hermes saved the non-human. If one of you handles that…thing, then I can try to talk our way out of a fight with the real DJ. Assuming that’s who it is.”

Marie will cast Momentary Flux in order to determine which opponent will cause the most trouble, and possibly see if the sniper really is Musicman, then cast Bestow Exceptional Luck on the next turn for the ally going up against the greatest threat.

With the guy pulling out the shotgun, that makes James’s decision easy. With his telekinesis, he’s going to try to hit the guy with the steel latticework of the light stand. When it’s not being swung he wants to hold it between the DJ and the group.

My guess for the dice pool is (Str (6) + Weapon (3) – Improvised (1) – Untrained (1). Dice pool of 7).

//The rules for improvised weapons are on pg. 135-136

//Concentration rules: Spend an instant action each round to maintain. If attacked, Resolve + Composure to maintain concentration.

//Update to my above post: I want to suspend the object above the bad guy and swing it down from above him, so that if my concentration breaks, it falls on him.

James will quickly realize the folly of trying to stand up to the shotgun. He intends to delay his action for when the DJ fires again. When the DJ fires his next shot, James will use the Turn Projectile spell, which will end his concentration on the telekinesis spell, dropping the large light fixture on the DJ.

Turn Projectile (Forces 3 + Gnosis 3: 6 Dice Pool) – //if it’s less than 5 successes, I intend to turn it harmlessly up, into a boat shelf. If I get 5 successes, I intend to turn the shot back on the DJ (180 degree “turn”).

Paradox (Gnosis 2 – Focus 1: 1 Dice Pool) //James will intend to soak the paradox if there is one

Marie will cast The Perfect Moment (in order to convince the sniper that her team is not a threat to him and to determine if he is MusicMan64) and hurry over to the fallen yacht and sniper where she will attempt to start a dialogue. If that doesn’t work, her back-up plan is to ‘fast-talk’ her way out of danger.

“Hey, did that guy just say that he is Musicman?” James will shout. “Shit! Andi, help him up, we could use a hand with DJ Dead Man Walking over here!”

James will turn to Genghis, “I have no idea what I’m doing, so a little help here would be appreciated!” James will take this opportunity to put some distance between himself and the shotgun wielding maniac. He’ll drag Red Feather along and gesture to Genghis, trying to put a rack of boats between him and the gunman. While he is moving, he’ll cast Spatial Map, giving him a heads-up map of the area in his head.

(Spatial Map – Int 4 + Occult 1 + Space 1 + Rote Skill 1: Dice Pool 7)

Muttering something about unfortunate timing, Marie will step on MusicMan’s gun that’s just out of his reach. “Look. We came here to save your life. You’re on the hit list of beings like the one that we thought was human.” I gesture without looking in the direction of the undead DJ. “Even if you don’t want to be allies, is there anything you can tell me about where to find them? Weaknesses? Routines?”

“I think we give him the gun, and worry about what happens after we deal with ReDead, Andi!” To MusicMan, “MusicMan, what do you say we call a truce until after we take out whatever this guy is, I have nothing against you, it was all just a misunderstanding.”

James will then pop out from cover after the last shotgun blast, and cast Telekinetic Strike against ReDead, while maintaining some cover from the boat racks.

Telekinetic Strike – Forces 3 + Gnosis 3 + Willpower 3: Dice pool of 9. Each success deals one bashing damage
Paradox Roll – Gnosis 2 – Focus 1 + 2 vulgar spells: Dice Pool of 3. Will soak successes as bashing.

(After James speaks) Marie will move the dinghy off of Musicman64 and hand him the gun. She’ll gesture for him to take the lead, “After you,” and will follow close behind to make sure he doesn’t aim at James instead.
